VULCANIZED VULTURE IN NEST - studio - 50 Church St. Montclair, New Jersey
If you've driven on any highway in America, chances are you've seen the mangled remnants of a truck tire.
These rubber pieces are the result of delaminated commercial tires; retreads as they're known in the industry.
Six months of collecting dozens of these fragments and bringing them back to the studio to photograph has resulted in my portfolio, Retread Characters.
RADIAL ALIEN - studio - 50 Church St. Montclair, New Jersey
For me, one of the most challenging aspects of creating these Retread Characters was giving them appropriate names.
This steel belted fragment could certainly have come from another galaxy.
CREEPY RUBBER HAND SQUID - studio - 50 Church St. Montclair, New Jersey
Many of the fragments that I collected had grotesque formations of exposed steel belting.
In this case, those twisted remnants took on a life-like appearance.

Of all the images I produced for my collection, Retread Characters,
this particular fragment was the easiest to name.

In collecting the fragments for this portfolio I learned that there were
many different grades of steel belting.
The rusted, lower quality pieces took on a more colorful appearance.
STEEL BELTED CALYPSO DANCER

This aptly titled remnant had just the right amount of rusted
steel belting to give it the perfect crop of hair.
PREHISTORIC VULCANIZED ALLIGATOR - studio - 50 Church St. Montclair, New Jersey
Just as the title implies, this tire fragment had the right amount of texture and shape
to transform into a living creature.
PASSING LANE SWIMMER - studio - 50 Church St. Montclair, New Jersey
I'd be the first to admit that creating this portfolio was more about my lighting and observational skills
than it was about actual photography. In the end however, all that matters is the finished image.

It's the direction of the lighting that allowed this composition to come to life.

The combination of rubber and shredded steel belting easily transformed into my favorite image from this portfolio.
I love how the deck of the ship has the perfect amount of chaos to suggest a violent battle.
