Fine art photography is a complex world.
Some people view an image and find it speaks to them. They want to continue the conversation. Others
feel the image, attempting to understand and interpret it. Others just don't get it.
However, with photography, as with any art form, it's always in the eye of the beholder.
George Diebold doesn't see situations the way others see them. Nor does he translate what he sees into
images quite the way any other photographer is able.
For Diebold, photography is not about manipulation and trickery. It's about movement, interaction and
interpretation. Photography is real life. It exists all around him… bombarding him constantly, urging him
to take notice. He is able to look at something seemingly ordinary and capture the energy no one else
sees.
Classically trained as a still life painter by one of Life magazine's foremost illustrators, Diebold
discovered photography in college 30 years ago. For him, it was a more exacting way to capture his
unique way of viewing the world. Diebold passionately believes that there is a right way and a wrong
way to do everything in life. His schooling and in-depth understanding of lighting, color and composition
are the keys to his ability to translate what is before him into a stunning work of art.
"Diebold's images are a reflection of his ongoing fascination with Hawaii, the American West, and man-made objects."
Of course, any artist worth exploring must understand light, color and composition. That's a given.
However, even doing so very well rarely sets an artist apart. Diebold sees the world around him,
interprets it and can transform an ordinary scene into a compelling photograph that pulls the viewer in.
When asked how he was able to "get that shot," Diebold is often silent. He credits his training and
exposure to people who believed quality was the only choice. He believes when any artist knows what
he's doing the end result reflects it.
Diebold knows what looks right and, once something catches his interest, he finds himself examining it
in a way that cannot be truly explained. He moves around it, taking it in from every angle. He sees the
way light interacts with it. He views the entire scene, determining the most appropriate composition.
Moreover, he is able to foresee how light and other intricate changes will alter his interpretation of the
subject.
In fact, when on the road -- sometimes covering as much as 6,000 miles in six weeks of driving -- Diebold
often spends hours sitting and waiting for all of nature's elements to come together perfectly.
